The Bella Vista municipality is located deep in the Chiapas region of Mexico and is the birthplace of Rosalba Cifuentes, the founder of Mayan Harvest.

This community is nestled in the Mexican part of the Sierra Madre mountain range at altitudes starting around 1400- 1700 MASL.

The community is divided in three and our partners from Balam Coffee Project focuses in the "Café del grupo de Mujeres". A group of 110 women from the community come together to try and sell their coffee as one. Rosalba explained that due to the extreme low prices of coffee, violence in the region and rise of asylum seekers and refugees have lead the majority of men in the community to leave. Up to 80-85% of the women are widowed or single mothers, and in some cases both.

Rosalba Cifuentes founded her organization to work with coffee producers in the area on improving harvesting and processing their coffee to get more competitive prices. Many of these producers have very little land, so these increased premiums make a significant difference and improve the livelihood of producers’ families while allowing them to reinvest in better agricultural practices. Mayan Harvest also provides medical and dental assistance to its members as well.
